Tales of the Jedi: Knights of Selani Sector

Factions: The Jedi Masters

Alec Mest-Krym

110 year old Kazali male from Kazal. 1.676m tall, 63.6kg. Bald head and copper skin tone common to Kazali, a Near-human species of the Inner Rim known for their philosophically rigid technology-stagnant society. Donning dark brown Jedi robes and cloak over his slender body. He wears his long and thin orange-grey mustache and beard loose and hanging.

His philosophy on the Force is relatively orthodox of Jedi, though he is ever vigilant for the presence and influence of the Dark Side, and indeed is by self-proclamation a .shadow. Jedi. While he once had an extensive relationship with the Republic Security Organization, his influence has faded, given his 3 decade lack of association with the agency.

Born in RY22,760 on Kazal in the Inner Rim. Became a (non Jedi) student of Jedi Master Tam Cjo on Kazal as he completed his secondary education at the age of 15 (RY22,775). Received pre-Jedi training from Master Tam on Kazal until the age of 17. Apprenticed to Master Tam.s eldest apprentice, Jedi Knight Iora Llacien, at the age of 18 (RY22,778). Granted rank of Jedi Knight at age 23 (RY22,785) and Master at 46 (in RY22,806). Successfully trained Jedi Knights 5 times, 3 of which have become Masters themselves (counting Jedi Master Zej Idole, who he completed training after redeeming from the Dark Side).

As apprentice, assisted his teacher, Jedi Llacien, in the expulsion of the Rodia-sponsored invasion of Jalao. Left training under Jedi Llacien when she refused to teach at the pace he desired, though returned to training by the end of RY22,779. Envoy of Jedi Llacien to the Mercantile Guild of Azee in mid RY22,780. Later in the next year, represented his Master, and by extension the Republic, in the originally informal negotiations between the rival clans on Uliului, in the face of numerous attempted interventions by both smugglers and mercenaries.

Granted rank of Jedi Knight in RY22,783 after only four years of training as an apprentice. Took additional training under Master Tam (who disapproved of his rapid attainment of Knight) while assisting in the search for a band of rogue dark Jedi apprentices in Adulian Sector. After the fatal duel with the last of them (and the earlier redemption of 2 of the 5) in RY22,785 liaisoned with the Senate Bureau of Intelligence for the next 2 years. Took a position in the training of agents of the Republic Security Organization (RSO) in late RY22,789. Left the RSO and returned to Kazal on an 8 month sabbatical midway through RY22,792. Spent much of the next few years assisting scouts and colonists in the Galactic Frontier. In RY22,795 accepted role as Watchman of Godol, a world that had suspected Sith influences (though there was never any evidence of such). Lost his first apprentice (taken at the end of his isolation on Kazal) to the Dark Side on that world and killed him in the confrontation that followed. Took training with Master Tsev Aght of Sullust, who came to Godol for the next year and a half. Relinquished role as Watchman of Godol in RY22,798 to Master Tsev (who himself would only stay on for another few months) and granted position in Corellia Sector Rangers. Was at the carnage of the Kessel Conflict in late RY22,799 and took service again with the Republic Security Organization, in Hutt Space, through RY22,803 (though his status with the RSO, much less his particular activities, were not revealed until many years afterwards, in Senate Oversight Committee hearings after the CorSec Incident of RY22,839). Returned to Coruscant in early RY22,804 where he served various social and domestic agencies for the next few years (which many would later claim was a continuation of his service to the RSO). Disappeared for the following next few years, though he.s rumored to have been sighted in the Galactic Frontier as early as RY22,806.

Announced the successful training of his first student, the human Renard Sulbio of Ghorman, whom he.d been training since RY22,801, and was granted the status of Jedi Master. Took another student, the Rodian child Seelo, as he accepted a request for mediation in Pylliar Sector in RY22,807. After resolving the situation of intrasector trade, negotiated between the rival governments of the politically fragmented world of Harnab, which ended in success and the acceptance of its (formerly non-voting) representative as a Senator. Debated Jedi Master Kulobb Well.ehy on Ossus over the nature of the Dark Side in RY22,810. Was one of four Jedi advisors to the Republic Ministry of Intelligence.s .Intelligence Summit. between Republic Security Organization, Republic Fleet Intelligence, the Corellian Security Force (CorSec), and the Senate Bureau of Intelligence for the next 3 years. Late in RY22,814 helped expose Senator Quellop.s conspiracy, which would eventually lead to the Republic interdiction and invasion of Aaldu, after which, in mid RY22,816, he proclaimed Seelo a Jedi Knight.

Roamed the breadth of the Inner Rim with his Caamasi apprentice, Ulayo At.Gla from RY22,818-RY22,822. After breaking up 3 petty crime rings, failed to apprehend the fallen Jedi apprentice Zej Idole, the mastermind of a much larger criminal syndicate that controlled the 3 fallen ones, and Ulayo was seriously wounded. Succeeded in chasing him down just outside the Core Worlds late in RY22,823, where Zej was saved from the Dark Side. Continued training Ulayo with Zej throughout the effort of the Republic to keep the peace (or at least limit the collateral damage) disrupted by the trade war between the Core Galaxy Systems and at least 2 Hutt syndicates. Announced Ulayo.s attainment of Jedi Knight in early RY22,825 and the completion of Zej.s training near the end of the year, as he accepted a request by the Republic Security Organization to instruct at the RSO Advanced Training Course. Left the RSO with a cadre of advanced RSO agents and his new apprentice (his 5th), former RSO Agent Sal Idana of Alderaan, in RY22,831 to participate in the Republic peacekeeping force preparing to enter the 4th Diamalan-Ishori War.

The course of the 4th Diamalan-Ishori War severely affected the peace of the Core Worlds for the 4 years it raged as well as the decades of cold war that both preceded and followed the Republic.s intervention. In RY22,828 the Republic.s mediation (led by Jedi Masters Xeluvwehy and Kaeryn Brightstar) failed, and within 3 days, there had been 5 separate clashes between the starfleets of the two powers, the largest of which involved no less than 20 capital ships (11 of which were lost with all hands and 5 more crippled beyond repair). By the second week of open hostilities, casualties had risen into the tens of thousands, and an emergency session of the Republic Senate had twice failed to reach a decision on what the Republic.s response should be. Disruption of commerce through much of the Core and Colonies regions followed as the Diamala and Ishori both attempted to isolate the other from their allies, neighbors, and trading partners, which was resisted by many. The widening of the conflict absolutely necessitated action by the Republic, and the Senate was finally led to ordering significant elements of the Republic Fleet, carrying the Rocket Jumper Elite Advanced Unit and sizable portions of the Republic Army, to quell the conflict. Fearing a bloodbath, the Ministry of Defense was grateful to accept to the help of the 8 Jedi Masters, 41 Jedi Knights, and two full companies of Freedom Warriors offered by the Jedi Masters of Ossus.

Master Mest-Krym led an RSO infiltration of the Ishori sphere while another Jedi Master (the Cathar Jedi Master Grallo) penetrated the Diamala in a combined effort of Jedi Shadows, CorSec, and the RSO. In the meantime, the Republic Fleet moved to combat the privateering and piracy plaguing the Core sectors of the Republic. In RY22,835 as Sal Idana rapidly approached the status of Jedi Knight, she was mortally wounded by a CorSec double agent, who betrayed the Republic infiltration team and nearly led an entire Republic Fleet Squadron into an ambush which could have crippled it. Instead, her heroism led to the Republic Fleet.s defeat of the main Ishori battlegroup at a minimal cost in lives and equipment to both sides, which combined with similar efforts (and results) of Master Grallo with the Diamala, finally led to a fragile peace being established, guarded by Republic peacekeeping forces and overseen by the Jedi.

The actions of the rogue CorSec double agent resulted in a clandestine war between the RSO and CorSec, which eventually left an opening to the compression bomb set off in One CorSec Plaza in late RY22,839. CorSec blamed the RSO and the RSO blamed CorSec, though the true culprits were a Hutt-sponsored syndicate. The evidence was uncovered by Jedi Master Renard Sulbio, Master Mest-Krym.s own apprentice, acting with the assistance of Republic Fleet Intelligence. The resulting hearings by the Senate Oversight Committee led to a massive scandal that resulted in several convictions, a massive reform of the RSO, and to the public humiliation of CorSec. A tribunal of Jedi Masters, including Master Mest-Krym, advised the Committee, which led to Master Mest-Krym being appointed Jedi Adviser to the RSO (and secretly reporting to the Senate Oversight Committee) well through RY22,844, taking his 7th apprentice.

In late RY22,844 he returned to Kazal, to found a Jedi training school there, with the approval, if not enthusiasm, of the government. His public exploits had made him enormously popular, and his new school was quickly overflowing with prospective apprentices. He invited his first successfully trained apprentice, Master Renard Sulbio, to come join him (with his new apprentice), as well as calling on Republic resources on Ossus to support him. He was successful and within the year had one of the most well supplied and well run such places of instruction in the Inner Rim. By the end of RY22,847 he had been joined by another of his successful apprentices, Caamasi Jedi Master Ulayo At.Gla, as well as 2 other Jedi Knights.

After proclaiming his 7th apprentice a Jedi Knight in early in RY22,851 he accepted a position on the Council of the Great Library of Ossus, at the invitation of its founder, the great Jedi Master Odan-Urr. While a member of the prestigious body, looked to by many Jedi throughout the Republic for direction and guidance, in addition to access to its material and philosophical resources, he helped direct the course of the Jedi as an Order, and gained even more prestige amongst the Jedi as well as the leadership of the Republic.

In RY22,855, Mest-Krym returned to his training compound on Kazal on a sabattical. He took his 8th apprentice and returned to Ossus by the end of the year. In RY22,863, Mest-Krym took his 9th apprentice, training him concurrently with his 8th. By RY22,865, Mest-Krym wanted to expose his elder apprentice to the wisdom of his friend, the Mystic Jedi Master Macen Diu Dantareen. He sent the apprentice with Master Macen to attempt to resolve the Betorok situation, and along the way investigate the ancient rumors that a Sith amulet from the Great Hyperspace War on Betorok perhaps being responsible for the Fall of Corrin U'Majna (and the susequent difficulties). The death of his 8th apprentice with Master Macen on the ill-fated expedition led Mest-Krym to decide to evaluate the truth of old rumors himself. He brought his 9th apprentice with him on his own journey to Selani Sector, answering the call of Master Theman Ar-Tauri to establish a Jedi Temple in Selani Sector and see to the truth of the rumors on the amulet, as well as the prophesied return of the Sith...

Selected Teachings of Jedi Master Alec Mest-Krym (circa RY22,870)

The Jedi Code

Emotion, yet peace
Ignorance, yet knowledge
Passion, yet serenity
Chaos, yet harmony
Death, yet the Force

Code of the Jedi Shadow

Peace rules emotion
Knowledge replaces ignorance
Serenity calms passion
Harmony eases chaos
The Force transcends death

A Jedi must know WHEN to act. To stand by and let evil deeds happen unimpeded is to succumb to the Dark Side just as it is to openly give in to one.s fear and anger and hate. There are times when action is appropriate and when it is not. A Jedi must not act out of fear or petty anger, but out of calm rationale. When a Jedi IS moved to action, the Jedi must be swift and decisive, yet ever vigilant against the seductive emotions that will to lead towards the slippery slope that is the Dark Side.

The Dark Side expends much of its efforts and energies to disguise itself as the Light. A Jedi who is calm and at peace will know the difference and be able to tell the Dark from the Light. For this reason, a Jedi does not react from passionate emotion, but from peace. To live in harmony with the universe, with the Force, is WHY a Jedi acts. Bringing peace and justice to the sentients of the galaxy is a most rewarding endeavor when on the path of harmony, the path of the Light Side. As Jedi live, so they pass into the Force.

The Jedi Way is not easy. It requires patience, courage, and honor. There is the path of the Jedi, and the path of the Dark Side. No other choices exist for those who can perceive the Force. If you are not acting as a Jedi, you are acting as an agent of evil. A Jedi does not act out of fear, anger, or aggression. A Jedi acts ONLY while calm and at peace. Revenge is the dream of the weak. The wise knows that no enemy is forever. The Jedi is merciful. The Dark Side spends most of its energies attempting to masquerade as the Light. It is for the Jedi to find and oppose Dark Side teachings and followers, to protect the galaxy from their insidious evil.

A special calling to many Jedi is that of a .Shadow Jedi. or .Jedi Shadow.. The Jedi Shadows are an informal grouping of Jedi who devote their time and efforts to studying the slaves of the Dark Side, of which the Sith are most prominent, and dark Jedi the most prolific (though still fortunately quite rare). These Jedi abide by both the Jedi Code and their own variation.

On the Jedi

"The Jedi Way is to serve and protect the peoples of the universe from the corrupting malevolence of the Dark Side..."

The Jedi are Knights of the Republic, protectors and defenders, preserving the galactic government, that it might bring peace and justice to the galaxy. In most cases, this facilitates an open and honest relationship, showing solidarity and strength, bringing hope and heart to the populace. Other cases require more subtle and careful measures, though.

Jedi serve the Republic in many capacities. Some Jedi take the roles of diplomats, while others take the role of healer, teacher, or philosopher. Some few even liasion out with Republic constabulatory or military forces. The intelligence apparatuses of the Republic also see the assistance of the Jedi. The involvement of the Jedi in such activities, in addition to mundane service upholding the Republic against external and internal enemies, is useful in identifying prospective Jedi and potential victims of the Dark Side.

Intelligence in the Republic is largely in the province of two organizations. The Republic Security Organization (RSO), which places agents in both field and analysis positions, is primarily aimed at internal threats to the stability and peace of the Republic. Republic Fleet Intelligence is the main source of military intelligence, directed almost exclusively to external threats. Both organizations (and rumored others) are nominally under the oversight of the Senate Bureau of Intelligence (which also operates its own independent field operations with its own agents), but operate with a certain amount of autonomy.

The informal establishment of the Jedi Shadows, first organized to find the exiled Sith Lord Naga Sadow, but with a later mandate to find and observe not only surviving Sith exiles, but also dark Jedi and other foci and phenomena of the Dark Side, naturally evolved into a symbiotic relationship with the intelligence establishments of the Republic. The current relationship, mostly informal, serves to both protect the Republic against relatively ordinary threats, and enables the Jedi to keep a watchful eye to servants of the Dark Side, which are potentially dangerous to the galaxy as a whole.

On the Force

"The Light Side, while not as quick or easy as the Dark, is the truth path to Mastery with the Force...

The Force is created by life and takes its form in a broad energy field permeating everwhere, touching everything. Jedi are trained to sense, and later to manipulate, the Force. In sensing the ebb and flow of the Force, Jedi learn to distinguish disturbances in it. The most common disturbances are those that are most subtle, those created by the natural life cycle, of birth and death, of a pure course of events, though even some of these can be large, signifying momentuous acts of heroism and horrible tragedies.

The manipulation of the Force by those who are sensitive to it creates more noticeable, and usually much larger, disturbances. Using the assistance of the Force to enhance one.s own abilities creates small, but quite distinct, ripples. Using the Force to the bend the fabric of reality to the will of the Force User, especially in flashy displays of power outside of the natural flow of events, creates much larger disturbances. All of these ripples carry the mark of the Force User, allowing perceptive Jedi to note its identity.

The greatest strength of the Jedi is the power of luminous beings, not bound to their point identity or biology. To unite with the Force fully is to be able to harness the great power of the Light Side. Through such a Force-united Jedi, the Force can flow through like a tidal wave of Light. Before such clarity and peace, the cataclysmic rage of the Dark Side cannot stand. A true Jedi recognizes that that their strength is drawn not from themselves, but from the energy of life, the Force.

On the Dark Side

"The Dark Side leads not to Mastery, but to Slavery. It hides well, but is ever present. Be ever vigilant..."

The Jedi Masters of Ossus warn against using the Force without full knowledge or control, and to heed the warning of Master Bodo Baas:

"Never, Oh Master Jedi, rest easy when your pupil begins to grow anxious to learn at a pace greater than that which you have set for him... Beware, Master Jedi, lest through carelessness and inattention you let loose on the galaxy a monster..."

The ancient Jedi Masters knew that too much power gathered too quickly can corrupt even the most selfless and devout apprentice Jedi. After careful research and training, the abilities of the Jedi can be practiced. However, before this knowledge should be gained, the Masters warn us to never forget the Sith, and to forever watch for their return.

The Jedi Shadows, combining their own discoveries over the millennia with the Senate archives on Coruscant and the records kept by the Jedi Masters on Ossus, have catalogued the fall of many Force users to the destructive and dark corruptions in the Force that initiates one to the Dark Side. In general, they have categorized those falling into three categories.

Of those falling into evil, common are those who are SEDUCED by the Dark Side. They give in to their fear, anger, and hate, breaking with the tenets of the Jedi Code. The Dark Side whispers in the ears of all Force-Sensitives, of gifts of power and the ability to control the weak and of dark practices, unholy and unnatural. The Jedi learned long ago, though, that it.s gifts are given at too high a price, that of slavery to a wicked and fickle folly. The Dark Side feeds on violence, hatred, anger, and death, and it is for these reasons that the Jedi disdain the use of violence except as the last resort. Even the Jedi most committed to serving the Light can eventually fall victim to too much death and too much violence. Violence, death, and war do not make a Jedi. The Force makes a Jedi.

Also common in the fall are those who are DOMINATED by the Dark Side, by choosing the path of inaction when an act of evil is being committed. Fear, guilt, and apathy grab hold of the individual, bending its will to that of the Dark Side. Obsession with past inaction and endless cycles and combinations of fear, guilt, and apathy lead to complete subservience to the Dark Side, and often to insanity. The Jedi of old knew this and joined with the then fledgling Republic to proactively bring peace and justice to a galaxy, serving the masses, rather than ruling or ignoring them.

More rare by an order of magnitude are those who have EMBRACED the Dark Side. By selling its soul, the Force User purposely and willingly not only accepts, but seeks, the Dark Side. The Dark Side is quick to answer and reward its slave, as long as it is fed with fear, anger, hatred, and death. Eventually the Dark Side provokes and instigates such things itself, even beyond the ability of its slave.s ability to produce them. In the end, the embraced finds that it is not embraced at all, but enslaved and captured and cannot escape, the same end as if they had been seduced or engulfed.

The end result of the fall, regardless of the particular path, is being CONSUMED by the Dark Side. Eventually the darksider cannot meet the demands of the Dark Side, and it begins consuming the hapless Force-user. The archives in the Great Library on Ossus document cases of both physical and mental degradation and decomposition as the darksider.s relationship with the Dark Side develops and progresses. The darksiders often find ways of prolonging their lives, through practices either medical or through abhorrent manipulation of the Force. The hunger of the Dark Side can only be delayed and eventually darksiders are completely consumed, either by their own folly or by the dark energies they.ve unleashed.

On the Sith

"The Sith are the most dangerous of the slaves of the Dark Side. Do not underestimate their abilities."

The Sith are not merely Jedi of a twisted philosophy, but the result of a unique culture.s pefected techniques for drawing on the power of the Dark Side. Once a Near-Human species of undetermined origin, they had a fateful encounter with dark Jedi fugitives fleeing the Republic and Jedi. Even before this momentous event in their history, the Sith had relatively perfected their sorcery. With the arrival of the dark Jedi who were to dominate the ancient Sith people, they congealed into an unholy hybrid which turned the insular and fragmented society into a unified and ambitious Empire.

The Force-Using Sith of the .Golden Age. have been categorized by the Jedi Masters of Ossus, according to skill and strength in the Force, into four different categories: Lord, Master, Adept, and Initiate.

Non Force-sensitive Sith were often reduced to an underclass, though there are examples of extensive training and grooming towards specific occupations and endeavors. The Massassi warrior-caste is the most popularized by the media of the Republic, though there were several distinct types including the technician and slave castes, with many more both hinted at and theorized by scholars.

On Lightsabers

"Ignite your lightsaber only when necessary, and even then only as the very last resort. As a Jedi, you have failed by being brought to violence... as a Shadow, you have failed by being discovered at all..."

A lightsaber in the hands of a fully trained Jedi can stand up to the technologies of modern warfare. Using only a lightsaber, a Jedi can protect himself from projectiles of all kinds and cut through all matter, given enough time and effort. Even so, the greatest Jedi seldom, if ever, ignite their blades. A Jedi.s strength, all of it, flows from the Force. The more a Jedi learns and masters the Force, the more a Jedi is joined with the luminosity that is the true reality and substance of the universe- the Force, and the less a Jedi needs a lightsaber.

Though he rarely finds an occasion to use it much anymore, Master Mest-Krym prefers an option for stealthy operation in his lightsaber, which led him to engineer in sound suppression and light shift selection modes. He.s constructed his waterproofed lightsaber of non-metallic components and uses a natural Ilum crystal rather than a modern power cell.
